Biography The Honourable J.J. Michel Robert (P.C., QC, B.A., LL.L.) was born on January 29, 1938 in Montreal. He studied at Collège Sainte-Marie de Montréal, Université de Montréal and McGill University. In June 2009, he obtained his doctorate honoris causa from Université de Québec à Montréal.

Political Career: sworn into the Privy Council on December 5, 1991 (the Right Honourable B. Mulroney). President of the Young Liberals of Canada, 1963-1965. A member of the Royal Commission on the Economic Union and Development Prospects for Canada (Macdonald Commission), 1982-1985. President of the Liberal Party of Canada, 1986-1990.

Professional Career: Canadian Officer’s Training Corps, 1956-1960. Lieutenant, Supplementary Reserve of the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals in 1960.

Admitted to the Quebec Bar on July 3, 1962. Partner at Cutler, Lamer, Bellemare, Burns, Robert, Proulx et Sylvestre, 1965-1968. Senior Partner at Robert, Dansereau, Barré, Marchessault et Lauzon, Montreal, 1968-1990. Lecturer in extra-contractual liability and civil procedure, Faculty of Law, Université de Montréal, 1970-1980. President of the Québec Bar, 1974-1975 and president of the Federation of Law Societies of Canada, 1976-1977. Council Member, Canadian Bar Association, 1975-1982. Author and co-author of several books and articles. Appointed Queen’s Counsel in December, 1982. Member of the American College of Trial Lawyers (1987 to present) and of the Professional Corporation of Industrial Relations Counsellors of Québec. Partner at Langlois, Robert, 1990-1995. Appointed member of the Security Intelligence Review Committee on December 5, 1991 and served until 1995. Appointed puisne judge for the Quebec Court of Appeal on May 9, 1995. Appointed Chief Justice of Québec on June 25, 2002. Appointed second vice-president of the Canadian Judicial Council in July, 2009.
