Finding Common Ground: Pro Bono Clients and the Art of Listening

A pro bono practice is filled with challenges for the volunteer lawyers who contribute their time and energy. They often work with a clientele that is not familiar, and have to reinvent themselves by developing some special skills.

Communication, both verbal and written, is a major challenge for pro bono practitioners. This workshop was an exchange between four lawyers in private practice about the nature of pro bono cases compared to the usual cases they handle. They discussed, among other topics, the ingredients for good communication between clients and pro bono lawyers, common pitfalls, and solutions to these pitfalls.
