Plenary Session - Part One
Plain Language Success Stories Abroad and Why Plain Language Matters
How is plain language faring in other countries? Why does plain language matter to lawyers?
Mr. Christopher Balmford, president of Clarity, an international organization devoted to plain language, and founder of an Australian company that offers plain-language training and editing services to law firms, gave a quick overview of plain language and examples of success stories in other countries.
Mr. Balmford also talked about why communicating clearly is so important, both for readers, and for enhancing the image and credibility of the organization producing the document, whether it comes from a law firm, an insurance company, a government department, or any other organization. Clear documents always enhance an organization’s brand.
He also touched on why lawyers seem compelled to write in a tone and style that demonstrates they are lawyers – which often confuses the message and alienates and frustrates the readers.
